Inconsistencies with system names / FQDN

Hi all!

I'm trying to resolve an issue the business have pressed me on regarding how Solarwinds names systems it discovers, and how to get some consistency in the names.

I have found three fields in the Nodes table of the database - Caption, DNS and SysName.  I have examples in my database where the FQDN of the node is used in all, some, or none of the fields, and where FQDN is in some of the fields, it can be in any combination of the three.  I have also discovered examples where some of these fields are blank.  So my first question is: What is the method to Solarwinds populating these three fields?

What I would like to happen is to have the FQDN in the DNS and SysName fields, and the simple name (non-FQDN) in the Caption field (as the three fields are used in different ways for different reports).  I was thinking of setting an alert when it identifies a new node that is not (or partially) using FQDN, which would run an SQL query to correct the fields, but as some entries do not give the FQDN across all three fields, I know this is not going to work consistently.  So I open up this problem to the wider audience, to find out if anyone else has faced this issue / resolved this problem.  Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this?  Any gotcha's I should be concerned about?

Ideally, the answer to my first question will help me solve the second without resorting to manipulating data, so I'm interested to hear what people are doing for this.

Thanks!
